For many Americans, 2020 has been a year like no other. Marked by a worldwide pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, and an overall tense political climate, Americans from all walks of life are facing unprecedented challenges. But for transgender Americans, these events have collided with ongoing struggles including higher rates of physical and mental health inequities, economic insecurity, and a national epidemic of anti-transgender violence.
Several community-run organizations, despite general underfunding, have been working tirelessly for years to provide direct services and support to the transgender community. The addition of COVID and federal and local cuts to funding have only made them more precarious, with many nonprofits experiencing steep declines in revenue even as they experience significant increases in service demands.
This video offers insight into the ongoing struggles of grassroots organizations and people in the trans community as we fight to continue to exist in a world and a year wrought with challenges.
