Developing Volunteer Resources for Sutter’s Fort Historic State Park

This summer I worked with the California Tribal Affairs Program, the Interpretation and Education Division, and the Cultural Resources Program, and Sutter’s Fort Historic State Park to create resources for the docents and volunteers for the fort. I created an extensive annotated bibliography which focused on the meta historical narratives of the Fort from the twentieth century. This annotated bibliography included sections devoted to the historical tourism, cultural mythmaking, and historical reenactments. Our hope was for the docents and volunteers to reflect on how the park is not just a relic of the nineteenth century but has also absorbed cultural and historical baggage since.
