Seev Suab: Learning, Performing, and Creating Kwv Txhiaj & Lug Txaj
Seev Suab is a collaborative music and cultural project with Sacramento-based nonprofit organization, Hmong Youth and Parents United, which aims to teach two Hmong vocal genres, kwv txhiaj & lug txaj, in ways that are accessible and tangible to many Hmong by braiding together a Hmong-centered framework of hx/stories, languages, and music theories. The original project centered on participants in northern California, but we decided to shift to remote in response to the gas prices and carbon footprint as well as the demand of the course outside of California. Centering participants living across the United States, we learn about the hx/stories of the two vocal genres, how to perform them, and how to amplify our presence with them.
